Alexander Sapozhnikov
(1925-2009)
Born in the Southern Urals. Lived and worked in Moscow.
Outstanding Russian graphic artist and illustrator of works by Western European classics and Russian authors. Engraved more than 200 books.
He participated in the decoration of the Moscow metro station "Novoslobodskaya", all parts of metal decorations were made to his sketches and drawings.
In 2001 Sapozhnikov A.V. made a series of illustrations for the famous novel of M. Bulgakov "Master and Margarita". According to the artist himself, he was highly critical of his attempt to create images from this outstanding work:
The feeling of fascination with the vague understatement, the wonderful melody of the Russian language - all this when reading the novel is very personal, its own.
