The artist's distinctive style was influenced by German expressionism and abstractionism, as well as by the St Petersburg painter Evgenij Mikhnov-Voitenko, to whom he dedicated one of his exhibitions.

Konakov's works are kept in the Russian Museum (St Petersburg) as well as in private collections in the USA, Germany, Japan, Norway, Australia, Russia and in the collection of the Noskin brothers.
