Old chapel

The artist depicts a quiet courtyard in a small town. There is a chapel in the centre of the painting. There are small outhouses leaning against it. On the left is a two-storey house with a pretty porch. Wooden bridges across the ditch seem to lead to the courtyard. Quiet life. Unfrightened chickens dine peacefully. Behind the houses a smooth river or lake can be seen. Remnants of brownish-brown foliage at the very top of the large trees suggest the artist has depicted late autumn. The day is heading towards sunset.

The overall tone of the painting is sandy yellow: yellow houses, yellowish shores and a strip of light yellow sky on the horizon. And the chapel itself is yellow. It may have been white at one time, but it has yellowed with age. Or maybe it was illuminated by the sunset. For contrast, the artist uses shades of grey, from the darkest, almost black, to lighter, almost blue, and browns. It is this that allows the chapel to come to the forefront.
