The painting shows Don Quichotte battling windmills. The windmills are really fantastical monsters, spewing flames and smoke. The mills are indeed fantastic beasts, spewing flames and smoke. In the foreground, Don Quichotte, seated at the foot of the mill, tries to fend off yet another foe - a huge, outlandish fish. A little further away his servant Sancho Panza barely holds Rocinante by the bridle. The work is made using different shades of brown, grey, blue, green as well as red and dark pink.
