The painting depicts a fairytale medieval subject. Amidst the castle buildings, surrounded by lush vegetation, the artist has depicted a giant in a bizarre jester's headdress with bells and a clock-face, who can control the other creatures like puppets, for he is larger than the tallest tower of the castle.  Behind him you can see the head in the mask of a plague doctor, and beneath the folds of the plume frolicking devils. Someone in a red cap swiftly swims away from the shore, apparently unwilling to obey the giant. The work is made using various shades of green, grey, blue and brown, as well as terracotta, red, beige and cream.
