The painting depicts a village - a number of similar houses with red roofs nestled together. Some of them huddled together, others lined up in rows, forming streets running down the hills. No villagers were visible, apparently barely into the morning, and only the broad-brimmed hat of a traveler in a dark cloak with a staff in his hand appeared in the foreground. The artist worked in large strokes without specifying details. Various shades of grey, blue, green and red with the addition of dark pink and cream were used.
