The painting shows an elderly couple sitting at a table in a very modest setting. Both look sad and detached. The woman is shrunken, as if by the cold, and the man can hardly hold a lit cigarette with his unsteady hand. There is nothing on the table but two cups of steaming drink. And the cups have a strange, uneven shape, as if they have aged and lost their former appearance along with their owners. Instead of a cosy lampshade, an ordinary, uncovered electric light bulb hangs over the table. Apparently, the couple are not strong enough and their resources are limited. The work is made using various shades of brown, grey and yellow, complemented by dark red and blue.
