Centauromachia

The painting illustrates one of the moments of the battle between the semi-mythical Lapith tribe and the Centaurs - the Centaromachia. According to legend, Pirithoi, king of the Lapiths, invited many guests to his wedding feast on Mount Pelion. Among the invitees were representatives of a large centaur tribe, neighbours and kin of the Lapithians. The centaurs had never drunk wine before, but at this wedding they pounced on it, did not dilute it with water, got drunk and went on a rampage. One of the centaurs attacked the bride, the others attacked the women and children.  The battle was the start of a great war which, according to most sources, was won by the Lapithians.
