In Chinese mythology, Chang E was the goddess of the moon and wife of the archer Yi. Legend has it that she secretly drank the elixir of immortality intended for her husband and drifted away to the moon. The foreground depicts a beautiful young woman in an ornate dress of black and red silk, her tall hairdo complemented by sumptuous gold jewellery with precious stones in the form of a garland of flowers. In her hands she holds an exquisite golden bottle. In the distance the artist has depicted a group of riders. One of them, the very first one, dressed in rich red, is probably Yi's shooter. The riders gallop among the mountains, white mist spreads over them. Fanciful grey clouds stretch across the sky, with the round moon white behind them. Soon Chan E.
