Amour and Psyche

The foreground of the painting shows the beautiful Psyche in a light blue and pink chiton, with butterflies fluttering around her. In Greek mythology, Psyche was considered the personification of the soul and was often represented as a butterfly. The girl is unaware that Cupid is hiding behind her, with his bow and arrows. The action seems to take place in a magical palace where Psyche lived as the wife of an invisible being who only visited her at night, unaware that it was Cupid. Beside her stands a lamp whose hot oil accidentally fell on Cupid during the night, which then caused many trials for Psyche. The background for the painting is dark enough so that the lit figure of the girl stands out and draws attention to itself. Various shades of blue, grey, purple and brown have been used, with light yellow, cream, blue and pink for contrast.
