The artist has depicted a corner of old St Petersburg. Stone buildings rise up along the cobblestone pavement. Not a single tree can be seen around. Only the house standing to the right has a wooden first floor, a semi-circular attic window and a cosy front garden surrounded by a board fence from behind which you can see lush shrubs. On the square several men in plain clothes and military uniform are discussing vigorously; in the distance a couple strolls along. Judging by their clothes, this is a scene from the 19th century. The work is done in a monochrome colour scheme: shades of grey and creamy white were used.
