A characteristic feature of this work, which deals with the theme of the sea, is that the canvas, which resembles a sail, is stretched over a "batten" frame. Two figures occupy all the space: an old man in a blue knitted jumper, a bright green hat and green pantaloons with striped stockings, and a dark-skinned young sailor in a naval uniform. The old man, with a large flushed nose and an earring, is sitting on a twisted rope in front of a keg, his left hand firmly gripping a bottle and his right hand deftly rolling dice. Young, hardly privy to the intricacies of the game, merely observes from over the professional's shoulder, gazing intently with large sad eyes. This striking work is made using various shades of brown, blue and yellow with the addition of bright green, terracotta, black and pink.
